The Honest Truth About China Sourcing Agents
Let me tell you something most sourcing agents won't admit: their job ends where your problems begin.
Most sourcing agents in China operate on a simple model — they find you a supplier, introduce you, maybe help with a few messages. Once the supplier relationship is established, their commission is earned and their job is done.
But what happens after that?
- The supplier wants you to pay 50% upfront. Who negotiates that?
- The goods are ready but need inspection before shipping. Who goes?
- You have 3 suppliers and need everything in one box. Who coordinates that?
- The supplier is giving you "foreigner prices." Who谈判 that down?
These are not sourcing questions. These are execution questions. And that's a completely different skill set.
What "Order Execution" Actually Means
Order execution is everything that happens after you've identified a supplier. It's the hands-on work of:
- Placing the order — in Chinese, using local business norms
- Following up — daily coordination with factories you can't visit
- Quality inspection — physically checking goods before they leave
- Consolidation — combining multiple orders into one optimized shipment
- Documentation — handling customs paperwork, invoices, export forms
The Difference in Plain Terms
What a Sourcing Agent Does: Finds suppliers on 1688/Alibaba, introduces you via email/WeChat, takes commission on introduction, disappears after the intro, can't verify goods remotely.
What an Order Execution Partner Does: Places orders directly with suppliers, manages the full order lifecycle, charges for execution work, stays involved until goods ship, physically inspects before shipment, consolidates multiple suppliers.
A Real Scenario
A client from Germany found a machinery parts supplier on 1688. The supplier looked legitimate — good photos, reasonable MOQ, responsive on chat.
The supplier quoted EUR 2,800. We contacted the supplier in Chinese, explained we were a local execution partner, and negotiated based on actual production cost. Final price: EUR 2,100.
The savings from one negotiation call more than covered our service fee for the entire project. This is what being on the ground in Dongguan gives you — negotiating leverage that overseas buyers simply don't have.
When You Actually Need Order Execution
- You have suppliers on 1688 or Alibaba but can't manage them remotely
- You need quality inspection but can't fly to China for every order
- You're buying from multiple suppliers and drowning in logistics complexity
- You're tired of paying "foreigner prices" you can't verify
- You need someone who answers WhatsApp and actually goes to the factory
We are not the right fit for everyone. But for the right clients, we solve problems that sourcing agents can't touch.
