How to Buy a Used Engine from China Without Getting Burned

The checklist we use before any client pays for a dismantled engine.

A used engine from the Guangzhou dismantler market can cost 10–30% of the new OEM price. That is why importers buy them — and why sellers who cut corners can still find buyers. The difference between a good deal and an expensive mistake is almost always the inspection you do before paying. This is the exact checklist we run for clients.

Rule Zero: Never Pay Before Photo/Video Inspection

If a seller resists sending photos of the actual engine — not a “similar unit,” the actual one — walk away. A legitimate dismantler photographs stock as standard practice. The absolute minimum before any deposit:

  • Photos of the engine from all four sides plus top
  • A clear photo of the engine code and serial number plate
  • Photos of the mounting points and any removed accessories
  • On request: a video of the engine rotating (crank test) or a cold-start video if the donor car is still intact
Tip: The engine code photo is non-negotiable. It is the only way to confirm the engine matches your vehicle variant — and it proves the photos are of a real unit in stock.

Step 1: Confirm the Exact Engine Code, Not Just the Model

“An engine for a 2012 Golf” is not a specification. That car shipped with several engine variants, and some are not interchangeable. What you need to match:

  • Engine code (e.g. CBZB, N47D20C, 2AZ-FE) — stamped on the block or on a plate
  • Emission standard version — Euro 4 vs Euro 5 variants of the “same” engine often differ in sensors and ECU compatibility
  • Gearbox pairing — manual vs automatic donors can have different flywheels and sensor sets

The safest inputs you can give a sourcing agent: the OEM number from your old engine, or the VIN of the target vehicle. With a VIN we can decode the exact factory configuration — see our VIN decoding guide.

Step 2: Understand What “Tested” Actually Means

Sellers use the word “tested” loosely. Ask specifically:

  • Compression tested? Ask for the readings per cylinder, not just “OK”.
  • Run before removal? The best case: the engine was heard running in the donor car and there is video.
  • Rotation check only? This proves the engine is not seized — it does not prove compression or oil pressure.

Each level of testing justifies a different price. A rotation-checked engine should be meaningfully cheaper than a compression-tested one with video evidence.

Step 3: Read the Wear Evidence Yourself

  • Oil filler cap and dipstick: milky residue suggests coolant contamination — a serious red flag.
  • Sludge under the valve cover (if photographed): poor maintenance history.
  • Rust on cylinder walls visible through the intake or exhaust ports: long outdoor storage.
  • Fresh paint on an old block: ask why. Sometimes cosmetic, sometimes hiding welds or repairs.

Step 4: Check the Packing Standard Before Shipping

An engine that survives the market but dies in transit is still a loss. Proper export packing for used engines means:

  • All fluids drained (also a legal requirement for most sea freight)
  • Open ports sealed against moisture
  • Bolted or strapped to a pallet or inside a wooden crate — never loose on foam
  • For mixed consignments: heavy items on the bottom, panels and electronics separated and padded

Step 5: Payment Safety

Standard practice with an unknown seller: small deposit to reserve, balance only after your inspection evidence (photos, videos, test readings) is delivered and reviewed. Never pay 100% upfront to a seller you have not worked with. If you use a sourcing agent on the ground, the agent inspects in person before the balance moves.

Import Rules Differ by Country

Some markets welcome used engines; others restrict them or require specific documentation. Before ordering, confirm your country’s rules on used engine imports — and tell your agent the destination so export documents are prepared correctly. We prepare the commercial invoice, packing list and export declaration for every consignment, and we will tell you honestly if your destination makes a shipment impractical.

What We Do Differently

Our team is physically in Guangzhou. For a used engine request we typically return 2–3 options with the engine code plate photographed, condition graded A/B/C (grading standard explained here), test evidence stated per option, and consolidation available if you are buying more than one part.
